March 8 marks International Women’s Day 2026, offering an opportunity for the UK manufacturing sector to reflect on the growing role of women within industry — and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Women now make up 28.4% of the manufacturing workforce, with representation gradually increasing across engineering, operations and leadership roles. At the same time, the sector faces a major demographic shift, with one in four workers expected to retire over the next decade, 74% of them men.

That transition creates a significant opportunity. To meet future demand and support industrial growth, the sector is expected to recruit around 800,000 more women by 2035. In partnership with Burnley College, investment in T-Levels and apprenticeships, Velocity Composites recognises the importance of investing in the future of the aerospace industry.

For companies operating in high-technology sectors such as aerospace composites, the issue is closely linked to long-term competitiveness. As advanced manufacturing becomes increasingly digital, global and innovation-driven, attracting talent from the broadest possible pool will be essential. International Women’s Day therefore serves not only as a moment of recognition, but as a reminder that the future strength of British manufacturing will depend on building a workforce that fully reflects the diversity, capability and ambition of the next generation.

Mentorship is not a one-time initiative; it is an investment in the future of the industry. At Velocity Composites, supporting the next generation means giving young people the tools, confidence and opportunities to challenge traditional barriers in manufacturing. By opening its doors to emerging talent, Velocity strengthens the innovative edge that comes from a more balanced and diverse workforce.
